3 Easy Ways to Pull off the Club Collar

The club collar shirt is a pretty elusive item when it comes to wearability. It’s tough to pull off with a tie, and it almost always simply does not work without a tie. So while we’re not saying there aren’t tons of ways to explore and make the club collar work, we are showing you the three surefire ways to do it.

The Gordon Gekko

And don't forget the braces!

Get a contrast club collar shirt, throw on your silk tie, and use a collar pin. And don’t forget some braces to hold those pants up. It’s all about power. This is the regal, powerful, perhaps even a bit nose-up look with the round collar. But it works damn well and it lets you run show in the board room.

The Effortless Prep

The club collar need not be such a big boy look. Take it easy and get your shirt, colorful cotton tie, and layer it up with a sweater or an unstructured blue blazer. Tie a four-in-hand knot oh-so-carelessly and don’t bother buttoning the top button. And listen up: structured shoulders will be the death of the look. The goal is to look sporty, like you’re one of those 1960s preps on his way to class. It’s pretty cool to make that club collar easy-going, and this is a foolproof look.

Take cues from Bergdorf Goodman Men’s Fashion Director Nickelson Wooster. It’s easy as a dark cotton tie, gray suit, and a white club collar shirt. No color here, gents. Easy peasy.
