Brands to Know: Drake’s of London
Drake’s of London first caught our eye when we were perusing the neckwear selection at Bergdorf Goodman, which is on the more traditional side of things, if we do say so ourselves. We were very impressed by the elegant layout of Drake’s table, which was filled with smart striped and dotted ties as well as some very sophisticated tartans and checks. While we enjoyed their ties, it wasn’t until we saw the Michael Drake ties at Barneys when we realized that there was something special about the tie and scarf specialist. Barneys layout was so unlike the more traditional ties we saw at Bergdorf that we had to check the labels to make sure these were by the same brand. These ties were not surrounded by Hermes and Charvet, but between Gitman Vintage and Barney’s house label. The ties in Barneys were slimmer and had great little frog motifs as well as some other fun designs.
It is the great diversity of Michael Drake’s collection that leads us to declare him one of the leaders in major neckwear. All of the ties are handmade in downtown London from top-of-the-line silk, which becomes immediately noticeable when you handle them and check for the all-important slip stitch on their backside. But Mr. Drake isn’t solely in the tie business as he has developed quite the collection of pocket squares, scarves, socks, gloves, and even some awfully handsome shirts. While we could describe each one of these products individually, we’d prefer to ask you to check them out in person so you can appreciate all of the fun little details. Make sure you really look at the collection together, as well, as we think Drake’s of London lives up to Mr. Drake’s ideal form of style,
“I’ve said many times that my look is a mixture of English and French with a bit of Italian thrown in as a spice, and it came from my experience in dealing with so many stylish men who helped me develop my own style. I particularly like the way the very best French dressers do the English look, a classic tweed suit with perhaps purple socks, great shoes, and a wonderful cashmere waistcoat in a slightly off shade of green. That’s my kind of thing.” –from The Rake

This is an exceptional brand that we sell in our store, it draws inspiration from the past but projects a fresh approach to modern dressing.
