Brands to Know: Fin’s
We love doing things boldly. Obviously you can overdo using bold colors, but too many Sartorialist shots make us hungry for the perfect bold colored shoes. And these days, Tod’s is dominating the market for cool loafers in fun colors. But it’s a shame, because the fact of the matter is not many guys have 400 bones to drop on a driving loafer, much less in a wild color — making it less versatile, and thus less worn.
That’s not to say there aren’t other cheaper options for fun colored kicks. Topman consistently comes out with some good pieces and other brands for quirky shoes do exist. But the issues with these options are twofold: Brands like Topman pump their costs into the material of those shoes more than the fit and quality of the shoes, which means they’re not made to last or they’re highly uncomfortable (we find the latter to hold with Topman); furthermore, if you’re going bold, the fit must be sleek — not fitted, sharp, and modern and you look like a clown — and unfortunately, most brands just can’t get their boldly colored shoes to fit sleekly. Take Reiss, for example. They put out an aqua/turquoise driving loafer modeled much like Tod’s Gommini loafer. But the fit is dreadful. You need a very wide foot for them to fit remotely acceptably; otherwise there is a giant space between the shoe and the midsection of your foot.
Well, enter Fin’s. It’s a British shoe label run by a young woman, Alexandra Finla. And it sure as hell makes us comfortable knowing that some of our female counterparts will approve — because these boldly colored shoes are darn tempting to buy. Not outrageously cheap — you’re looking at $135-180 a pair, but that’s significantly better than Tod’s. And they’ve got two suede models that really do it for us: the Original George Loafer and the Marshall Collection.
We are normally very, very reluctant to endorse a shoe without some sort of embellishment on the vamp. It often looks too blank when there isn’t a horsebit or a slit for a penny. But the sleek fit and bountiful color options for Fin’s’ Original George Loafer allay our concerns. You’ve got to have a little fun with your shoes, and with options like bright blue, pink, red, and turquoise fitting brilliantly at just $135, we’re pretty pleased.
But the real kicker (no pun intended) is their Marshall Collection loafer. Awesome colors: browns, green, blue, and purple. With the shoe’s narrow profile and well-sized heel, the look is hip and sleek, making it perfect for a bold shoe.
We’ll be ordering our purple loafer soon. In the mean time, check them out on the web at www.finsforhim.com.
