The side seam is the seam that runs down your side from the armpit to the base of the shirt. Often it is even between the front and back of the shirt, but it can be moved for a better fitting shirt.

Why you want it- Well, you don’t really have a choice here, but want you want is a well-sewn and well-placed side seam. It should be sewn with single needle, and you want to look for a side seam that is placed so that the shirt fits well on you.
