Prepidemic Guides: Picking a Summer Belt

Belts are one of the pieces in a guys wardrobe that go seriously overlooked. Come summer when you’ll often be wearing nothing but a shirt and shorts, you’ll want a nice accessory to put a twist on your otherwise simple outfit–that’s where belts come in. If you look closely at the most stylish of men, you’ll rarely see them go beltless. This summer, more than any in recent memory, we’ve been seeing guys having a lot of fun with season belts.

Summer belts can come in many forms, but your best bets are ribbon, madras, and braided cotton. The first is probably the most popular and also has the most variety. We love striped ribbon belts in the summer because you can really have fun with your color combination. Sure, we love a simple red, white, and blue ribbon belt, but a vibrant yellow or pink can really take a look to a whole new level. Along these lines, a madras belt will also embolden your outfit. We expect you’re all very well acquainted with the most preppy of summer fabrics and hopefully you’re ready to expand the area madras can be found in your closet past shirting.

The braided cotton belt is the most subdued of the three options. We’re willing to bet you’ve seen a ton of these any time you’re near a beach and there’s a good chance you wore a braided cotton bracelet at some point in your life. We love wearing these with shorts for that oh-so-casual feel when the temperature starts rising. So go out and find your perfect summer belt, just don’t spend any more than $50 on it.

If I remember correctly, the Rugby store on University Place in New York has a lot of Ribbon and Braided belts going for $19.

  2. You have no idea how hard it is to find anything like you posted above in Portugal, especially at that price point. The options I’ve seen go for a minimum of 60/70€, something like 70/80 US$..

    @Beyond Fabric:

Same here in Germany. A Ralph Lauren ribbon belt costs 70 Euro. That’s ridiculous.

  4. Clark says:

For those abroad, many vendors on ebay have posted j mclaughlin, j crew, ralph lauren, ralph lauren rugby, and vineyard vines ribbon or braided belts for very inexpensive costs-most of those vendors will ship internationally

  5. David says:

I agree. There’s alot RL stuff thats worth its price but a ribbon belt for 70 Euro is – like been said – ridiculous.

I like the belts, I do. But at the end of the day, where are those pants in the second photo from? That whole outfit from the limited view that we get is spectacular, this guy put it all together so well.

  7. I like the braided cotton belt! Looks very rustic ;)

  8. DKCyde says:

Kiel James Patrick also has a couple of options, if you are interested

  9. Jim says:

A trip to my local thrift shop rewarded me with 3 very nice belts- 2 varsity ribbon and 1 cotton braid. The best part? The price: $1.39 (USD).

You never know what you’ll find at a thrift shop!

  10. Great post, I do think sometimes we do overlook an important aspect in the makeup of an outfit and that sometimes is the belt. I do happen to prefer the ribbon belt for its thin nature and smooth transition.

What are those trousers in the second last picture, they’re the same as these http://www.prepidemic.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/gqpitti71-1-2.jpg
