Prepidemic Promotes: Washed Jeans

Something we’ve been seeing a lot recently–especially from those stylish fellows over in Italy–are these really washed jeans. They’re faded into a very pale blue that would take years to do if you tried to get this effect by wearing out your raw denim. While we haven’t exactly been the biggest fans of taking short cuts to get your desired look with jeans, the ones we have been seeing aren’t those artificially distressed pieces that you see with intense whiskering and acidic fading. These jeans have a much more natural look to them as there really aren’t any portions that are more faded than others.

One of the best things about these washed jeans is how comfortable they are. A good pair of washed jeans will feel great the first time you put them on to the point where you won’t want to take them off for a very long time. They’re also perfect for summer because they’re a lot lighter than the raw denim you might be used to. If they’re lightweight enough to wear during the summer in Italy, they’re going to do just fine over here in America. They’ll also work with nearly any jacket as the light color gives you that mismatched trouser/jacket combination that we love so much. Check out Brunello Cucinelli for the best ones on the market.

Really? Have you ever worn the Cucinelli jeans? I just don’t believe you would say those were the best on the market if they were made by the JC Penney house brand…, and the cut certainly doesn’t appear to be very flattering. I think it’s a disservice to your readers to suggest they go out and buy the “best” pair of $400 jeans to get a look that is, by its very name, the product of a process that we should be neither too lazy or timid to do ourselves. The fashion-industrial-blogplex has convinced people that washing their jeans more than once every six months (with daily wear) is verboten. And now, before so many faithful followers have even set creases on their APCs, they’re being asked to ditch them and get a pair of $400 Brunello Cucinelli jeans that create the illusion that one has not only worn them a lot, but washed them a lot too! While it’s true that many people jumped on to the raw denim bandwagon late, and as the tempests of fashion now appear to be shifting (slightly) against the raw denim tide…for the many people who rushed out and bought APCs, Nudies, and so on, and probably haven’t had a chance to wear them enough to induce any serious fading, one way to get the kind of even fading you’re pointing out in the jeans in the post is just by washing those raw jeans as often as you want…that way creases don’t set, and you won’t get contrast fades. Especially with jeans like APC, the dye is designed to fade quickly, and you could lighten up a pair significantly with just a handful of washes. No need to retire those jeans you just spent $200 on in the winter if you believe that what you now need is a pair of “washed” jeans…Just wash your old jeans.
