Store Profile: Grown & Sewn

184 Duane St.

Style: Authentic American dry goods

Known For: Combining khakis and jeans using American only fabrics and manufacturing

In November of ’09, Rob Magness secured a cozy little spot in Tribeca for a month-long installation to feature his new line of “Kax” along with inspiring American art. Fast-forward nearly a year and that temporary shop is still going strong as Grown & Sewn headquarters. Sitting across the street from Any Warhol’s old silk-screening factory, 184 Duane St. is nestled in a beautiful area that still maintains a very authentically artistic feel to it. It may be a bit out of the way to some, but the shop almost thrives in its secrecy as it is such a breathe of fresh air in the hustle and bustle of New York City.

The space itself couldn’t be any more welcoming and it immediately helps you to understand the exact aesthetic Grown & Sewn is going for. Working together with the art of Purvis Young, the clothing really takes on a life of its own. As a notable Ralph Lauren alumnus, Mr. Magness knows a thing or two about American style and has done a great job of creating a new niche that feels as classic as chinos or a button-down oxford shirt. His combination of khakis and jeans find a great balance between Western ruggedness and New England cool that you really can’t find anywhere else.

Along with his signature “Kaxes,” you can find some more classic chino-style trousers, distressed leather belts, and some fine tote bags that ought to peak the interest of any wine enthusiasts out there. Overall, this is the kind of store that is perfect for a guy looking to escape the city life for a bit and feel like he’s somewhere a little more human. We love that Grown & Sewn sources all of their fabrics from U.S. mills and does every bit of their manufacturing in The States–it’s something we rarely seen these days. So make sure to pop on in and take a look around and make sure to chat with Rob as he’s always around working on product or making sure everything in the store is in order.
