Rugby is one of those labels that really has flown under the radar for the most part, which is surprising to us considering the style and name it has going for it. With only 11 stores nationwide, Rugby isn’t as in-your-face as J. Crew or Banana Republic, but what they don’t have in visibility they make up with quality. We’re amazed there aren’t more affordable lines out there because it seems like there is more than enough room for them, but this is what makes Rugby all the more special.

Rugby’s flagship store in New York isn’t the biggest place in the world, but it’s a microcosm of everything the line stands for. When you walk in, you almost feel like you’re inside of a small college shop from the early 60s. They really go all-out on making the atmosphere of the shop match the style of the clothing. You’ll see a lot of their logo-heavy gear but it will be tastefully interspersed with their basics so that you’re not overwhelmed. We went straight for the University Chinos as soon as we got in as they’re the best play on the market for a guy who wants a slim pair of pants at an affordable price ($70).

The clothing in the store speaks for itself, but what really makes their a quality spot is the service. All of the salesmen (and women) are really friendly and aren’t constantly breathing down your back trying to force you into sales. They’re a genuinely knowledgeable bunch that seem to really get the Rugby aesthetic and enjoy working there. You can have a conversation with any one of them and not feel like you’re getting a sales pitch. This makes Rugby a great place for a young guy who doesn’t quite feel comfortable at some of the more nose up establishments around town.
