Store Profile: Save Khaki

327 Lafayette St.

Save Khaki is making waves in the fashion world with their perfect chino pants. Luxuriously soft, flatteringly tailored, and in three cuts – the slimmest of which tops our list as the best pair of khakis yet seen – these are the essential khaki, embodying everything you’re looking for in these frequently botched pants. The brand touts itself as a company naive to trends, stuck on making the classics ever better.

Walk into the store and you feel the intimacy. A chalk board lists items and prices. Khakis go for $105-115, and that’s probably why you’re there. It’s a small room with shelves on your left stacked to the brim with corduroys and khakis, a table immediately in front of you full of khakis stacked in several piles, each a foot high, organized by color, and a railing off to the right, on which hang rugged button down shirts made of denim, chambray, and chino, as well as henleys and sweaters. Scattered throughout the store is their awesome, awesome toggle coat (trim and classic).

To try stuff on, things get a little sketchy. You head downstairs into a creepy, tiny, nonetheless well-lit basement and literally get changed under the staircase in a curtained “room” as they call it (maybe “space” is better?).  At any rate, service is incredibly knowledgeable. We spoke at lengths with them on the aspects of the perfect khaki, the idea behind the store, and interesting products of theirs, such as the selvedge chino.

Founder/designer David Mullen

So if you’re in the market for a pair of khakis, head on down. They’ve got all shades of brown, grays, greens, blues — all with that understated but just right attitude. And the stuff for above the legs is pretty awesome, too.

I bought a pair of Save Khakis a few months back. I agree with your assessment that they’re a great fit, which is what a lot of khakis lack. However, my complaint is that the khakis wrinkle extremely easily, to the point where ironing doesn’t well remedy. To me, these are more of a casual pant, as I can’t see myself walking into the office with crinkled chinos.

    Thanks for the kind words!

When will they have an online store????

I never understood why people get so hung up on fit. Find a good tailor, there’s plenty in the Lower East Side who will taper for $10 and hem for $5 to create the ideal fit for you.
