Summer 2010: The Review Part I
With the first official day of summer right around the corner, we spoke to some of the most knowledgeable and stylish guys in the business about what you should be sporting in the warmest of seasons.
A cotton suit is one of the secret weapons in a man's wardrobe that will separate him from the masses come summer
Personally, I’m feeling Summer ’10 is going to be a little more dressed up. I love the idea of a crisp cotton suit in beige or black with a solid cotton/linen shirt, solid tie and cordovan tassel loafers with no socks. Other than that, I’m also feeling for neatly combed hair, mirrored sunglasses and a serious watch — it’s going to be the summer to show everyone you know what you’re doing.
Michael Bastian was the former menswear buyer at Bergdorf Goodman until he launched his eponymous line in the Spring of ’07. His clothing can be found in some of the country’s best stores, including his alma mater Bergdorf Goodman. His newest venture with GANT will be available in stores this Fall.

A linen or silk blend suit is another way to stay cool in the summer if you still need to look a little more formal
Light weight everything. I feel so tired of trawling the streets of New York in heavy clothing. Light weight trans-seasonal fabrics are an important factor for S/S ’10. I get a real sense for wool/linen and wool/silk blends. Something a little more sophisticated than the traditional seersucker suit that you see in the Hamptons. Just because it’s hot does not mean you either have to dress down or look over over heated.
Color: Whether as an accent or a a full on look, color serves as a great lift in still poor economic times.
Sunglasses: The most important and stylish accessory of the summer. Choosing the correct frame can make (or break) an otherwise familiar look. The sunglasses that you choose speak volumes of the person behind them. I personally like vintage frames that no one else has. It’s worth going the extra mile to be individual, right?!
Simon Spurr worked at Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Calvin Klein, and Ralph Lauren Black and Purple Labels before venturing out onto his own. His small line of jeans has grown into two full collections as Spurr has infused American Rock n’ Roll style with British elegance.

Printed shirts and shorts haven't exactly been in style of late, but the Burkman Brothers have used their international perspective to bring them back in a more wearable way
We are currently overseas in the Asian tropics and what we’ve been wearing on this trip is definitely the look we’ll be sporting back home in New York this summer. We’re all about short sleeve printed shirts, Burkman Bros jersey-lined dobby shorts, bucket/panama hats and tortoise shell aviator sunglasses (must have brown lenses.) Think Gilligan’s Island meets Revenge of the Nerds Part II: Nerds In Paradise.
Ben and Doug Burkman have become quite the team as they were recently nominated for Best New Designer in America by GQ in 2009 for their line of traveler-inspired sportswear. Burkman Bros. sells across the country at Barneys and has become one of the feature collections of the Co-Op.

Experimentation is one of the most important attributes of a stylish man and there is no better way to experiment than with summer fabrics
There are three things a man should definitely consider when going into Spring/Summer mode. First, the transition needs to be made, bring out the linen, cotton, silk! All about embracing the season through texture. Second, COLOR! Break away from the safe. Experiment wisely; color, if balanced correctly, becomes nothing but a compliment to any desired look. Third, hosiery this time of the year becomes optional. Just make sure when you expose your ankles you are doing it right. Whether it’s a pair of jeans or trousers the bottoms should keep a healthy distance from your shoes.
