The Subscriptions: Fantastic Man, Monocle, and The Rake

Yes, we read GQ and Esquire. No, we are not always satisfied. Yes, we’ve heard about the end of print media. No, we’re not going to stop reading magazines. Why? Because there is a new generation of men’s style magazines that are revitalizing print with their pointed articles and attention to aesthetics. They aren’t just something you throw away after you read it because they are so well designed that you almost feel like you’ve just gotten a new book in the mail every month. Gentleman, let us introduce you to the three best magazines on the market.

Fantastic Man Magazine

The Subscriber: He who follows the runway and loves minimalism.

The Aesthetic: Fantastic Man loves black and white. They do it a fashion-forward way that is always impressive in its elegance. They’ll put a simple slim suit with a nylon top or an elaborate graphic sweater and make it look totally wearable. This is “high fashion” at its best because they make it wearable.

Why We Love It: Besides the fact that they are so ambitious with their fashion and still manage to keep it wearable, visually the magazine is top notch. Their minimalist design work great in print and is very refreshing if you’ve been reading GQ and Esquire where there is so much going on. Finally, their features are just so spot on. Whether it’s Mr. Ford or Mr. McGregor their incite is always fascinating and original.

Monocle Magazine

The Subscriber: He who loves Bicycle-friendly cities.

Founder Tyler Brulè

The Aesthetic: Their style is along the lines of the whole Japanese revival of Americana. Selvage jeans, cardigans, canvas bags, and plain toed shoes. They really enjoy the functionality in fashion and do very well to keep a precise look while grabbing their clothes from America to Sweden to Japan.

Why We Love It: Of the three, this is the magazine that is the best for everything non fashion-related. For this reason, it’s the most commercially successful, as well. They’re always finding great nooks in cities from all over the world, which is often times frustrating as we end up wanting to buy tickets to four or five new places after every issue. They also do a great job with more general design as they always have some great piece on architecture or interior design.

The Rake Magazine

The Subscriber: He who loves Cary Grant and Italian tailoring.

The Aesthetic: Ahh, now this is what we’re talking about. We absolutely love what The Rake is doing. Taking their name from Gianni Agnelli, who was referred to as “The rake of the Riviera,” they’ve figured out elegance and taken it to a new level. They mix Savile Row, Italian Sprezzatura, and a pinch of Tom Ford to create an aesthetic that is often times bold, but always just do damn good looking.

Why We Love It: They really don’t mess around with things outside design. They know what they do well and they stick to it–we respect that. It was about time that there was a style magazine for a more elegant man and The Rake has filled that void. They have so many awesome pieces from some of the most well-respected names in style from all the big boys like Tom Ford and Charvet all the way down to Drakes of London and Norton & Sons.
