Top 5 Shirt and Tie Recipes: #5 Bright Shirt, Club Tie
Matching shirts to ties is a skill. This list will primarily emphasize either tricks to matching or ways to cultivate a “look.” In this case, we’re talking about a look moreso than a matching technique. Any old Schmoe can pair a solid shirt with a patterned tie, but in this particular instance, we’re just showing you one way to put the two together and be guaranteed to come out with a certain feel, an overall look, a particular aesthetic.
In this case, it’s the look of the go to hell prep. While the go to hell look has debatable origins, the name comes from a Tom Wolfe quote. Regardless, preppies have for years worn collared shirts and chinos — but in their freer, more relaxed, or perhaps just rebellious moments, they’re keen to throw on a bright pair of slacks with a badged blazer and motif tie.
We’ll hush now and cut to the chase. Bright shirt and a fun club tie. It’s a classic look, it will always do the trick, and it’s easy as… hell.We like a yellow shirt with this skull and crossbones motif as it gives a particular edge to the aesthetic. It says you went to boarding school but weren’t afraid to flick off the headmaster. But any bright shirt and old club tie will do the trick. Tie a four-in-hand knot, maybe set that tie askew to give it all the attitude you can, and you’re ready to rock.

Great choices as usual…it’s a pity rugby isn’t available in Europe :/
Isn’t it poor form to wear a tie with a button-down collar?
@ Paul
Couldn’t agree more on that one.
i’d firmly disagree with that. but not in a formal way with the tie pulled all the way up and perfectly tied, it’s got to be casual, don’t make the knot perfect and let the short end hang out to the side instead of tucked in the back.
it’s all about the way you wear it, not what you wear. gentleman.
